Revised for the latest refillable cartridges - March 7, 2008

    Prefilled Easyrefill Cartridges Instructions

Using Prefilled Easyrefill Cartridges - Read the complete instructions carefully before installing the cartridges.

    Common problems

  • Print head clog - A new set of cartridge will not cblank
yle="font-size:16px;line-height:19px;">horizontal lines, is not always caused by clogged print heads.  Air bubbles trapped in the print heads will cause banding on
prints similar to the banding from clogged print heads.  To make sure the print heads are in good shape it is a good idea
to have a set of cleaning cartridges to clean out the print heads before switching to 3rd party inks. A print test will verify if
the print head is in good condition.

  • Tips to avoid print head clogs
Always leave the cartridges in the printer, even when the ink monitor showing the cartridges are empty.  By not removing
the "empty" cartridges, the print heads will remain moist.  Chances are, there will still be a some ink left inside that will
keep the print head moist.   If the cartridges are removed from the printer, the inks inside the print heads will dry and will
clog up the print heads.  A special cleaning fluid may have to be used to get the printer back to working condition.

The recommended steps to installing the prefilled Easyrefill Cartridges:

  • Before switching to the refillable cartridges and our bulk inks, print the purge page ( the multi-color solid color blocks
) to confirm the printer is printing perfectly.  If there is a clog, or banding, fix it before using the new refillable
cartridges.  If the print heads are clogged, a new set of cartridges will not fix it.  Use the extra cartridges in the
ink/cartridge package to make your own cleaning cartridges.

Print the purge page for test using best photo setting with regular paper.  A perfect print will have no banding.  This
confirm the print heads are in good shape.  This print pattern will be used again after the cartridges are installed.

  • Click to download the purge pattern.

  • Once it is confirmed the purge print test is good, the purge pattern comes out without blank lines get the refillable
cartridges ready for installation.  Again, if the purge pattern is bad, clean the print heads first.  The vent plugs must be
removed to allow ink flow.  The printer will not print if the vent plugs are not removed.  The refill plugs must be firmly in
place or gravity will pull inks out of the cartridges.

How to unclog Print heads in case if the print heads are already clogged?
f

Reminder - blank lines on the print is not always cause by clogged print heads.  If the print test done before switching to the
refillable cartridges comes out perfectly, the blank lines is most likely caused by air bubbles in the print heads.

How does one clear the air bubbles in the print heads?
This suggestion is from a customer.  I want to thank George Hawkins in the UK for giving me this suggestion.  George
uses the refillable cartridges in his Epson 2100 and the Epson R2400.  When trying to set up the refillable cartridges,
George had a hard time getting a good print pattern.  He cut out the tips of the Q-tip and use it as a straw.  Incidentally, a
straw that fits the cone part in the cartridge carriage should works just the same.  This straw was inserted into the cone in
the cartridge carriage.  Drip enough ink into the straw until ink fills the particular nozzle.  Some ink will leak out from the
print head so do not flood the print head with ink.  After filling the particular nozzle with ink, air bubbles is pushed out and
the than cartridge is replaced.  He did this to the nozzle he could not clear using the Epson driver cleaning utility.

Should I shake the cartridges like I shake the original cartridges?
Yes, it will be a good idea to gently shake the cartridges before removing them from the package.  To avoid inks
splashing, do not shake the cartridges after the plugs are removed or the cartridge have been installed.  The cartridges
should be left in the upright position of at least 12 hours after shaking.  This helps to allow the air bubbles that might have
been trapped in the cartridges to rise to the top.  The cartridges are ready to be installed.  Again, do not remove the
original cartridge from your printer before these refillable cartridges are ready to be installed.

Should I install the cartridges as a set?
Yes, the cartridges should be used as a set.  Be sure the chip did not come off while in transit.  Seat the cartridges firmly to
hear a "click".  Press the cartridge down on the rear corner and the front corner a couple of times to ensure the cartridges
are seating correctly.  Inspect the cartridge to make sure the chips did not come off in transit.  Never install a cartridge
    without a chip.

How to identify the vent plugs?

    The vent port

After the cartridges are installed, the printer will do a self clean.  Make sure the vent plugs are removed, the cartridges are
seated by pressing down on the two top corners and a click is heard.   Print the purge pattern again three times at best
photo setting.  Observe if the print test purge pattern is getting better.  After three pages, the pattern is not improving, use
the SSC utility to do an Initial Charge or Powerful Cleaning.  Print the purge page again.  Repeat printing the purge test 3 -
4 pages on regular paper and observe if the pattern improves.  If you have doubt when doing the print test, send me an
instant message by Skype or by email.  Skype is an instant messaging service that  will allow faster respond to your
support questions and will help me provide support more efficiently.

For empty cartridges : The vent port

How to get a good nozzle check without wasting too much inks:

Do not use the Auto nozzle check and clean, the Auto Nozzle Check and Clean could empty the cartridges in minutes.
Use the SSC utility to clean.  The SSC works much better and does not waste much ink.  However, the SSC has no Mac
    support.  Windows

    Download the SSC utility

    1. The SSC allows cleaning only black or just color.
    2. Initial charge should be used after the cartridge has just been replaced.
    3. Powerful cleaning
    4. Normal cleaning

If black is not printing correctly, use Black head cleaning. If one color is not printing right, use Color head cleaning.

The SSC should be used and the Auto nozzle check and clean in the Epson driver utility should be avoided.

    Print the purge pattern.

Print 3 - 4  pages of the purge pattern, this will give you a good idea if air bubbles are trapped in the print heads.  If the
purge pattern is showing large blank section, see if it will improves after printing 2 - 3 pages.  If not, run the SSC initial
charge.  It it is just blank lines, run the powerful clean.   Print the purge pattern again, it should be much better.  Print a few
more pages to see if it improves.

When the cartridge is full, the cartridge could drip in the beginning during the initial set up. This dripping will stop after
    printing 4 - 5 pages.

Keep printing the purge page and do not swap the each time a cartridge is removed, air will be introduced into the print
heads. If you must clean, use the SSC utility.

The software monitor ink level cannot be used to monitor the actual ink level.
High capacity refillable cartridge has more ink in the cartridge. The software ink monitor level will not show an accurate
level. When the ink monitor is showing the cartridge is at half, you are likely to have the cartridge 80% full. If the cartridge
goes empty, you will know. The prints will not come out right.

efillink       The Ink System Pro CIS with the Ultimate Pigment Inks

  • Lower your printing cost to 1/8th
  • Save thousands of dollars over the life of the printer
  • Our refillable cartridges are designed to be refilled without removing it in the printer.
  • You can also keep an extra set on hand.  Swap out the entire set if you do not want to stop in the middle of a
project.  Refill when you are not printing.

For the cost of less than two sets of cartridges, get enough inks to refill the original cartridges about 10 times.
Get a set of cartridges already filled with inks, one set of empty cartridges, syringes included.
Receive the bonus cleaning kit with this package.

The Ink System Pro CIS is the best long term solution for the higher volume continuous printing.  The CIS requires less
frequent refilling of the external tank compare to the frequent refill of individual cartridges.

The Ink System Pro CIS, 8 oz ink set, spare cartridges, syringes and bonus cleaning kit will replace about 20 sets of
    cartridges.

Print more spend less money and less time dealing with changing the cartridges or refilling the cartridges.

Warning: Repeating cleaning cycles will drain the cartridges before the printer is ready to print.  It should take only a
couple of cleaning to get the printer to print a good nozzle check.
In addition, the excess ink could cause electrical short and "End of Service" message.

If the park pad has become saturated from excessive cleaning, a siphoning effect could drain the cartridge completely.
    Excessive cleaning could cause

    1. The park pad to be saturate with ink and the print head in contact with the saturated park pad will siphon out the ink in
    the cartridges.
    2. Increase the service counter value causing " the end of service " message displayed.
    3. It could dump enough ink inside the printer causing ink to drain out leaving a pool under the printer.
    4. Excess waste ink inside the printer from cleaning could cause electrical short.

If you have to clean more than twice, the print problem is probably caused by air in the cartridges.

Print solid color test pattern to clean : Download the print test pattern here.

Avoid repeating the cleaning cycles whether you are installing the refillable cartridges or dealing a clog.  Email me to set
up for a support session if you had to clean more than three times and you still do not see improvement with the nozzle
    check.

Do not remove and install the cartridges because this will introduce air bubbles in the print head and you will have to start
    over.

The SSC utility is a free program that is available for download.   ( SSC works on Windows PC only )
The SSC utility does not support the R2880, R1900 and many latest model printers.
This program is more effective in getting rid of  the air bubbles from the print head.

This program will let you do a number of tasks :
    1. Initial Charging when a new set of cartridges is installed.
    2. Powerful Cleaning
    3. Black only cleaning
    4. Color only cleaning.
    5. The SSC utility can also reset the service counter for your printer.

  • Ink leak - Not seating the cartridges correctly or leaving the refill plugs out of the cartridges will cause inks to drip out of the
cartridges even if you are not printing.  Make sure the refill plugs are sealing the refill holes.  When installing the cartridges,
be sure to hear a "click" and press on the top of the cartridges to make sure the cartridges are tightly seated

We have been shipping a new kind of cartridge that does not require vacuum fill since the beginning of 2009.  The
cartridge is very easy to use.  It works almost like the OEM cartridge, except you can refill the cartridge over and over.

On top of the cartridge, you will find a plug and a tape.  The plug seals the refill port.  Add ink using the syringe and blunt
needle provided with the refill kit.  Re-install the plug to seal the refill port.  If this port is not sealed, ink will leak out from the
print head.  The tape should be removed to open the breather port before printing.
The cartridges must be used as a set.  The chip will not work when mixed with Epson chips.

Monitoring the ink level, refill the cartridge promptly before it is completely empty

To make sure the actual ink level matches the software ink monitor level, be sure to refill promptly when the software low
ink warning is observed.  Pay attention to the software ink level each time a print job is initiated.

To refill the cartridges, just remove the refill plugs on top of each cartridge, fill the cartridge with ink after the low ink
warning is observed.  Do one cartridge at a time to prevent using the wrong color ink in the cartridge.  Seal the refill port
immediately after a refill.  This brings the software ink level and the physical ink level to full at the same time.  If the
cartridge is not promptly refilled, the cartridge could run dry.

    Tips

If the printer have not been used for a couple of months, install a set of cleaning cartridges to print the solid color purge
pattern on regular paper for print test before switching back to the ink cartridges to ensure the printer is at 100%.

If you have to clean the print head.  Caution : Never apply pressure to force open a clog.
Just gently inject no more than 1 ml cleaning fluid and re-install the cartridges.  Do this very slowly so there will be no
pressure built up while applying the cleaning fluid.  Move the carriage to the cartridge replacement position.  Remove the
power cord before applying the cleaning fluid.   Leave the printer after the cartridges are re-installed.  Check the details on
how to clean the print head by going to : http://www.efillink.com/Support/HowToUnclogPrintHeads.html

The refill port should be sealed except for ink refill.  Take the refill plug out and work on one cartridge at a time.  Seal it
immediately afterwards.  Avoid spills by doing this slowly and have some tissue paper on hand to wipe off spills.  If the refill
plug is not sealed properly, ink will drain out of the cartridge.

Resetting the chip - As a rule, refill the cartridge every time when the chip is reset to full.

When the ink level reaches message
will tell you the cartridge needs to be replaced. &nb19px;">approximately 20%, the cartridge LED will flash and the software ink monitor pop up  The R1800, the
R2400, and the 1400 will auto reset.

The R1900 and the R2880 requires lifting and re-seating the cartridge to reset the chip.  The chip will reset only when the
low ink LED warning is present.   The chip reset will not take place if the low ink warn/error LED light is not flashing even if
    the cartridge has been re-seated.

How do you reset the chip?
Move the cartridge to the cartridge exchange position, press the ink button to initiate a chip reset.  This will make sure the
software ink level and the actual ink level is bring back to full.

Attention:  For the R1900, the cartridge must be lifted from the carriage and reseated to reset the chip.  The chip will not
reset if the low ink alert is not there even if the cartridge has been reseated.

Avoid the software ink level going beyond 20% level.  After the software ink level reaches empty, you may need a
chip resetter to reset the chip.  Try unplugging the printer power cord and plug in the power after a couple of minutes and
see if the chip will reset.  When the software ink monitor is showing the cartridge is going empty and there is a solid or
flashing cartridge LED light displayed, this is the 20% low ink alert when the cartridgeshould be reset.

should be refilled and the chip
